For the exhibition Theatrical Realms of The Whimsical & Tragic, Grant introduces portrayals of somewhat familiar objects that seem to float in and out of the dream state alongside a video component that brings fragments of these dreams and memory back to life on the gallery wall. Site-specific lighting and cast shadows are used to alter and bring dimension to the gallery.

Grant’s technique of creating shadowed lighting emulates the collective, immersive, and intuitive discourse of the original installation- what curator Roy Flukinger calls her “environment of wonder.”

These works provide entry into imaginary worlds of whimsical creations that at times portray life on the lyrical and playful edge of balance and stability. The works suggest a theatrical world that references the ridiculous, the tragic and the unexpected.

All images are printed by the the artist and available as 47”x35” or 27.5”x20” limited edition archival pigment prints on Hahnemüle 308 Rag papers. Edition sizes are 9 and 20 respectively. Each print has a hand-torn white border with a de-bossed signature stamp on front and labeled and hand-signed en verso. The video projection is a 3-minute loop.

Night Journey uses the shadow as metaphor to examine the perceptual and psychological aspects of the dream-state and provides a pictorial access to the unconscious.
