Night Journey
Forthcoming from MW Editions - September 22, 2026
After more than two decades of exploration, Susan kae Grant’s Night Journey culminates in a 164-page monograph published by MW Editions. Bringing together 89 black-and-white photographs made since 2000, the book traces Grant’s exploration of the dream-state, memory, perception, and the unconscious across seven chapters.
The photographs interact across spreads and unfold into longer visual narratives, including overlapping images printed on translucent paper and triptychs revealed through gatefolds. The book extends the immersive experience of Night Journey into a tactile, unfolding form.
With the exception of a series of triptychs, whose side panels were photographed on location in Europe, all images in Night Journey were staged by Grant in her Dallas studio. Here, she acts as a shadow theater director, orchestrating scenes and models that are devoid of color and evocative of fairy tales, nightmares, and—probably—Plato’s allegory of the cave.

As writer and independent curator Trudy Wilner Stack observes:
“In the lush blacks and milky grays that saturate these pages, Grant materializes ghostly figures, animals, objects, and sometimes woods to get lost in. She invites us into a cumulative, immersive parallel existence of forms both absent and present.” —Trudy Wilner Stack, writer and independent curator
