Retailing, Wrinkles and Wisdom

Retailing Wrinkles and Wisdom, 1976
9" x 12" x 1", Limited Edition of 23
Sepia Toned Silver-prints, Letterpress

Retailing, Wrinkles & Wisdom documents individuals in Madison, Wisconsin that are well past retirement age yet still in business for themselves. The individuals portrayed possess a sense of revitalization and pride not only in their work but in life itself.

Through out the book, each individual is photographed in their respective business and features their personal surroundings which reflect the years of accumulation indicative of the passage of time.

Image and text pages measuring 9” x 12” consist of Strathmore papers that include thirteen original sepia toned photographs tipped into place. Opposite text pages of hand-set Palatino Roman letterpress type state the name of each merchant’s business alongside the year of establishment.
Retailing, Wrinkles & Wisdom is the first letterpress book produced under Grant’s imprint, The Black Rose Press.

This project was partially funded by the City of Madison Cultural Affairs Committee; the 1976 Summer Art Grant, Madison, Wisconsin.
