Night Journey
Site-specific Installation, 2007
5501 Columbia Art Center, Dallas, Texas
(30' x 40') Fabric Murals 4’ x 8’ each

First seen as a gallery installation of translucent images on suspended fabric panels, Night Journey examines the perceptual and psychological aspects of the dream-state and provides a pictorial access to the unconscious. The installation is an experiential room-size work that re-creates the fragmented and overlapping experience of dreaming by combining large-scale photographic murals printed on chiffon fabric with audio recordings of whispered phrases. Upon entering the space a female voice can be heard whispering phrases overhead.

Viewers pass through a “maze” of twenty-four (4 ’x 8’) images that sway and flow with the motion created by viewers walking throughout the space. The fabric images are first printed as 48” x 96” dye sublimation prints and then heat-transferred onto chiffon. The translucent quality creates a layered effect that changes depending on the viewer’s position. The gestures depicted, suggest a fragmented narrative as they shift in and out of focus, signifying the impermanent quality of the dream-state.
