Night Journey is an on-going series that represents a collaboration of artistic creativity and sleep laboratory methodology in the exploration of dreams, memory, and the unconscious.
The project consists of four complimentary forms; a room-size installation of 4’x8’ digital murals, printed on chiffon, juxtaposed with a sound-track of whispered phrases; a suite of black & white prints, a projection piece, and most recently a series of large-scale triptychs.
The inspiration for the project came from the artist’s desire to conduct an inquiry into the subconscious and the dream-state.
To conduct research for the project, Grant worked with sleep scientist, Dr. John Herman at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Together they designed a methodology by which Grant slept as a subject in the sleep laboratory and was awakened from REM sleep, by technicians, in order to capture the visual quality of the dream-state.
Night Journey examines the perceptual and psychological aspects of the dream-state and provides a pictorial access to the unconscious. This project raises universal questions and re-creates an unexplainable experience all humans share.
